I have recently assumed responsibility for my agency's Fire Prevention Division. Our current team consists of a Fire Marshal, a Fire Inspector/Investigator, a Fire Plans Examiner/Investigator, and a Public Educator.
Looking ahead, I anticipate adding another Fire Inspector/Investigator in the upcoming budget year, with plans for additional staff over the next three years.
I am currently enrolled in the Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program at the National Fire Academy (NFA). During my tenure, I have recognized that our agency lacks a formal career development framework or documented pathways for upward mobility within the Prevention Division. We also do not have a process that allows line personnel to transition into Prevention roles.
For my EFO project, I have chosen to address this gap by developing a comprehensive roadmap for career development within the Prevention Division. My vision is to establish a robust team consisting of a Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, four Inspector/Investigators, and two Public Educators. As our city continues to grow rapidly, this expansion will ensure that our Prevention Division evolves to meet the increasing demands of the community. Notably, only one position has been added to the division in the past 30 years.
