Chief Harmes began his career in the fire service in 1972 as a paid-on-call fire fighter in a small community in Michigan. He was appointed Fire Chief, full-time in 1985. Currently he is with the Grand Blanc Fire Department and has the held the position since 1989.
Chief Harmes received his B.A. and M.A. from Siena Heights University. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officers Program and has held the Chief Fire Officer designation since 2003. He has served as an instructor at Eastern Michigan University in the Staff and Command Program and has taught numerous courses throughout his career.
The Chief is Past President of the IAFC (2006-2007) and has served on numerous committees during his tenure with the IAFC. He has also served as President of both the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs and the Southeastern Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs.
